ree

to gaze up at the stars

is to celebrate our smallness

and to reach beyond where you were found, where you will return to, what you have come to know

plainly put, that is love too

love is a dream realised

each time you stare wide-eyed

in awe of its simple reality

like breathing it comes

catches you unaware when you realise

no one taught you to do this and yet

you know nothing else

often through all the haze

you can barely see it

the love burning so far away

that we must pretend it is small

in order to believe it is ours.

and where would we be without the stars?

and if the sky was only a velvet blue cloth stretched taut?

we’d never look up

and what a shame that would be

because there are dreams

dangling like hooks in that blackness

and if you look closely and for too long

more and more of them reveal themselves

and then

love creeps with soft feet into the night

like a well-known secret

and sometimes the stars look down for light too
